Beverly Messenger, $500

Her handmade book was entirely dedicated to bamboo. All the jurors commented on its creativity, beauty and how it reflected Ms. Messenger’s strong devotion to bamboo. This award will allow her to move from first prototype to first edition. Every aspect of this book is dedicated to bamboo: materials, imagery and text. The title, to bamboo…an homage, says it all.

Georgia Rowswell, $500

Ms. Rowswel’s mixed media wall art celebrates bamboo’s strength and line. One juror commented, “Creative, perhaps one of the most beautiful art using bamboo in submissions.” She cuts, layers, experiments and clearly enjoys the potential of bamboo in the studio. Her bamboo “bones” was especially appealing. Nice, large body of cohesive work.

Gerri Sayler, $500

Bamboo poles are cut into short rounds for Ms. Sayler’s mammoth wall and floor installations. Tiny pieces of bamboo undulate across flat surfaces into surprisingly rich patterns. “Fresh and innovative.” Ms. Sayler gives bamboo an entirely new audience.

Honorable Mentions
